Luke Schmitz Survived Iraq

The Fergus Falls Journal did a great job with Luke's story. Pretty accurate details of the accident, however we find more information all the time. Such as....Luke WASNT in his gunnar position, he was actually sitting behind the driver at the time and Schmidt was in the turit. Also, Luke really doesnt have any burns, luckily. Yes, the shrapnal (I should learn to spell that) did sear as it hit the skin, but you should see how lucky luke really is when you see the guys coming out of the burn unit. Wow, its hard to say Luke is lucky, but he is. He isnt burned beyond almost recognizable as I have seen, he has at least one leg, and the injuries to his arm will heal nicely. Another thing, Luke doesnt actualy have any broken fingers. We have heard so many reports of different diagnosis of his arm, but he has a fracture due to the 'flying stuff' in the middle part of the lower arm. He does have a pin through his thumb, you can see the top of it when looking in his wrapping. He said he remembers it being pretty torn up.
Luke did see his leg today. The doctors came in early and changed the bandages and he got to catch a glimpse. When I talked with him, I could tell he was upset and said he was 'sad' and kept it at that. A new wheelchair arrived today that is actually fit for Luke. It looks pretty neat-o, I just might have to take a spin...just kidding. This time it has a roll bar...kind of. He wont be able to fall back, which I'm pretty sure is a good thing, so no Luke, no tricks in the chair yet.
